Because you can have too much of a good thing. Next time, I would consider splitting this or the Croque Monsieur (same thing without the eggs) with a friend, and adding something lighter such as freshly squeezed fruit juice or the yogurt-and-fruit parfait. But even with this balance and the tastiness, I could only eat half. I liked how the arugula added a slight bitterness and the cornichons (little sour French pickles) served on the side were vinegary and acidic, nicely cutting the richness of butter and melted cheese. (Would have loved smaller pieces of this as a sinfully delicious hors d’oeuvre.) The grilled bread could have done with less butter, as the meal’s cumulative effect was very rich. The eggs also didn’t seem to have any added salt, which was great because the ham and cheese had plenty. I don’t know why I don’t bake eggs more often because, when cooked as these were, they are moist and fluffy with a soft but not runny yoke. The ungrilled side had Black Forest ham covered by Gruyere cheese and topped with two baked eggs.

It consisted of two slices of sourdough bread, buttered and grilled on one side to a crisply golden brown. I chose the Croque Madame ($9.75), glad to see it came open-faced rather than rolled and deepfried. Breakfast at Pain D’Avignon is a rich and heavy proposition, most likely great fuel for people headed out to harvest hay or muck stalls, but a bit overwhelming for those of us whose work morning includes typing, hurrying and thinking hard. I went on a weekday morning, later in the serving hours (breakfast ends at 10:30 a.m.) and next time, I would go on a weekend when I had time to either walk off the meal or go home for a nap. So when I heard recently that they were serving breakfast, I figured breakfast comes with bread or on bread. This French bakery nestled next to Barnstable Municipal Airport has, for years, had me at the cranberry-pecan rolls, sourdough bread and loaves of chewy, nutty multigrain.
